Loss connects too many veterans, service members, and military families.

Friends and fathers lost to war. Mothers and grandfathers whose service shaped the next generation. Comrades whose memories still evoke a chuckle.

Each person leaves behind a legacy of duty, friendship, humor, and love.

The War Horse’s Memory & Honor page is a place to remember them.

We are grateful to our readers and supporters for sharing tributes to friends, family members, mentors, and loved ones who are lost but will never be forgotten.

He was a young soldier in the newly formed 101st Airborne in WWII. He jumped into Normandy in the early hours of D-Day and earned a Purple Heart. We cannot imagine the courage it took to jump from an airplane in pitch darkness into an uncertain landscape and then into a pitched battle. He was a part of the Greatest Generation.

In addition to my grandfathers, I want to acknowledge all African Americans who served during the “greatest generation.” I encourage everyone to think about the sacrifices of those who served, despite knowing they wouldn’t receive their much deserved veteran benefits due to racism. Their efforts have contributed to a better country.
