Following 9/11, Matthew Hefti left college to serve in the Air Force. Hefti reflects on his promises to remember and all the things he chooses to forget.
Matthew Hefti
Matthew J. Hefti is the author of “A Hard and Heavy Thing.” He spent 12 years as an explosive ordnance disposal technician, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan four times. While enlisted, he earned a bachelor’s in English and an MFA in fiction. He is now in his final year at the University of Wisconsin Law School. He has contributed to the anthologies “MFA vs. NYC,” “Retire the Colors” (Hudson Whitman, forthcoming), and “The Road Ahead: Stories of the Forever War” (Pegasus, forthcoming). Among others, he has been published in Electric Literature; Vol. 1 Brooklyn; Literary Hub; and War, Literature & the Arts. He is a 2018 War Horse fellow.
