Invisible Service–Military Families Bear Burden of American Freedom
I knew I was away from home too much, I missed too many Little League games and anniversary dinners. I thought I could make up for it when I was back home.

DonatePaul “Greg” Smith served for 37 years in the Army and Massachusetts National Guard, retiring in 2014 as a brigadier general. Smith sometimes defines his service as “one disaster after another,” beginning with riot duty as a second lieutenant and ending with command of the military joint task force that responded to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Smith also had a long career as a public school teacher and administrator. He currently teaches counterterrorism at Nichols College and is a frequent contributor to ARMY and Military History magazines.
