About the Role

The War Horse is seeking to contract a Newsletter and Social Media Manager to steward readership engagement across digital platforms. This person will report to our Managing Editor and work closely with our editorial team to bring our journalism to readers through compelling newsletters and social media.

This position is a temporary contract engagement, anticipated to last four or five months (October 2026 to February 2027), covering a planned leave of absence. The role offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to The War Horse’s mission and team during a defined period and may involve knowledge transfer with the returning staff member at the conclusion of the contract.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and manage The War Horse’s newsletters, including writing and curation
  • Maintain and manage the organization’s social media content calendar across multiple platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn)
  • Execute The War Horse’s end-of-year newsletter fundraising campaign
  • Design and write engaging content tailored to multiple social media platforms, in close coordination with the editorial staff

Qualifications

  • One to three years of experience in journalism, social media management, content creation, audience engagement, or an equivalent body of work.
  • Expertise with newsletter platforms and email marketing/fundraising campaigns
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and style across platforms and formats
  • Comfort working collaboratively with editorial teams under deadline
  • Experience using Canva to design content for social platforms
  • Reliable project management, task execution, and communication skills in a remote work environment

Parameters and Compensation

Compensation for the work performed will be $1,800 per month. We estimate this position will require 10-12 hours of work per week over a four or five month period. While the hours are flexible, it is essential that the candidate is available to collaborate in real time at least twice a week between 1-4pm ET and consistently meets deadlines.

Please submit a resume and one-page cover letter to careers@thewarhorse.org by the end of the day, August 17, 2026. Standout early-career candidates and recent graduates with strong samples are encouraged to apply, as are veterans, military spouses, and individuals from other historically underserved populations.
